Services / Programs
At the mediation table our goal is to provide a space and process that allow individuals to respectfully and effectively move from conflict to resolution. As highlighted here, Community Mediation Services, Inc. continues to focus resources on areas in which mediation measurably reduces the cost of unresolved conflict: housing, schools, neighborhoods, families, courts, youth.
What is mediation? Mediation is a voluntary process that brings disputing parties together in a neutral setting to resolve issues. At the mediation session, the mediators facilitate the discussion, ask questions, and write up any agreement the parties reach. The mediators are not judges and do not impose a solution. The parties themselves decide on the actual agreement. Each party receives a copy of the agreement. Because the agreement reflects decisions made by the participants, mediated agreements enjoy high rates of compliance.

History
Community Mediation Services (CMS) has provided exceptional services to the northern and western suburbs of Minneapolis for more than 25 years. We make a difference in the community because of the support of dedicated volunteers, referral partners, and public and private funding. Our staff is knowledgeable of the mediation process, provides individuals with a grounded understanding of how a mediation works, and prepares individuals for mediation.
Each
volunteer mediator attends a 30 hour mediation training certified under
MN Rule 114, completes an apprenticeship
and fulfills annual continuing education requirements. We
provide these rigorous training opportunities and supervision to
ensure professionalism in the mediations we arrange.
Mission
Our mission goes beyond the mediation table as we improve the very way in which our community addresses conflict. CMS seeks systemic, community-wide change. To that end, throughout 2010 CMS strategically sought out and provided leadership for collaborations designed to increase scale and streamlining of mediation and restorative justice services.
